CHAPTER 15

We had no time to waste and no plan, but we were leaving the bunker anyway. All we were able to come up with was that we needed to leave, and we needed to move fast. We could quietly figure out what to do as we moved along.

I needed at least a couple hours to heal up more, but we didn’t even have a couple of minutes. I was positive I would die if we stayed. There was still a chance we could both survive this.

“You’re sure you’re good enough to go?” Zander asked for the sixth time.

“Mmm hmm.” I nodded. I didn’t even want to waste the energy answering. That was how unsure of myself I was. My non-committal hums were as much as I was willing to give.

I let my eyes linger on the protruding vein in his neck that I had my lips on earlier. If I could get just a few sips of fresh human blood, right from the source, my healing would speed up exponentially.

I almost asked him if he would let me bite him. We were standing at the bottom of the thick metal ladder that led up and out of the bunker. Zander poised to climb up and my mouth slightly opened to ask the question. But I just couldn’t. He’d already done so much for me. He was still trying to help me get out. I couldn’t ask him for one more thing, especially when it was such a huge thing to ask. And worse . . . would he think I was a monster? He made it clear he knew I wasn’t evil. I was worried that asking would undo that.

“Alright,” he nodded. I couldn’t look up at the long narrow ladder; it was too daunting. I was just going to have to do it as quickly as possible and just hope I made it. “Let’s go.”

Zander moved swiftly up the rungs and then tugged on the door. It squealed and groaned as he swung it open and I had yet to climb up a single rung, but I watched him carefully.

He paused. The forest was quiet, and the sky was a light blue with the moon still out and slowly giving way to the sun. It was the next morning, which meant the hunt had started almost twenty-four hours ago.

He finally glanced back at me and realized I hadn’t made a move yet.

“What’s wrong? You’re not scared of heights, are you?”

I shook my head and laughed. “No.”

“You’re too hurt to climb up here.”

“No. No,” I said. Even I knew how lame I sounded.

Zander saw through the facade. He backtracked down the ladder so quickly I didn’t even have time to get out of the way and he nearly knocked me over. That was when I knew for sure just how much trouble I was in. My reaction time was painfully slow.

“Of course you can’t climb up. Your shoulder and your ankle aren’t healed yet. Shit.”

He reached for my shoulder as if he were going to check the bandage, but I shrugged him off.
